As stated, in Portugal there is no specific SSH programme funding. The programmes in which SSH-related research is more evident are those mainly devoted to the national priorities, as listed below.
(1) The Operational Programme for Competitiveness Factors involves a total cost (public and private) over 5.5 billion euro (with Community co-financing, through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), of 3.104 million euro). The Priority area with some relevance for the SSH system is “Knowledge and Technological Development”, with a total budget of 773.800.000 euro.
(2) The Human Potential Operational Programme has a global allocation of approximately 8.8 million euro, of which 6.1 million euro are subsidized by the European Social Fund. This programme includes priority areas normally also classified as programmes.
Formally, FCT funds research unit, fellowships and studentships.
A part from the above references as well as of the more recent programme “FCT Phds”, there are no programmes to mentioned closely related to SSH.
However, there are some cooperation programmes with foreign universities and clusters of excellence that may involve SSH research: Harvard, Austin, and MIT.
